§ 54-1. Definitions.

  • The following words, terms and phrases, when used in this chapter, shall have the meanings ascribed to them in this section, except where the context clearly indicates a different meaning:

    Highway means any public thoroughfare for vehicles, including state roads, county roads and public streets, avenues, boulevards, parkways or alleys within the city; also all streets, avenues, boulevards, parkways and alleys within subdivisions, which are now or hereafter may be used by the public, although not dedicated to public use, but designated as "private" upon the plat or map of such subdivision.

    Motor vehicle means any self-propelled vehicle not operated exclusively upon tracks, except farm tractors.

    Motorcycle means every motor vehicle having a seat or saddle for the use of the rider and designed to travel on not more than three wheels in contact with the ground, but excluding a tractor.

    Operator means any person who operates or drives a motor vehicle.

    Owner means any person owning or renting a motor vehicle or having the exclusive use thereof under lease or otherwise for a period greater than ten days successively.

    Trailer means any vehicle without motive power designed for being drawn by self-propelled vehicles, except those running exclusively on tracks.

    Vehicle means any mechanical device on wheels, designed primarily for use on highways, except those propelled or drawn by human power, or those used exclusively on tracks.
